Drinking and partying is not a common occurence in Tan Land.
However, there are some rare occasions that call for libations.
When they do partake, Tan Landians always know the tricks to minimize the impact of their nighttime shenanigans.
Given the upcoming New Year, it’s only fitting that I share some of them with you.
1. Seed oils/vitamin E
What would a Tan Land article be without mention of seed oils?
Although blaming every modern ill on seed oils may sound trite at this point, seed oils have a very strong affect on the body’s ability to process alcohol.
Seed oil decay (aka lipid peroxidation) produces, among other things, toxic aldehydes, which are processed by the liver like many toxins.
So is alcohol.
Interestingly, the same enzyme, aldehyde dehydrogenase, processes both the aldehydes from ethanol and seed oils.
Your liver produces a finite amount of this enzyme, so naturally if it is depleted by seed oils, there will be less leftover to deal with the booze.
This is perhaps one reason why people used to be able to tolerate much more alcohol than we can today.
Conclusion: if you’re going to drink, avoid seed oils. It’s best if you’ve been detoxing from them for a while too.
Check out the seed oil detox guide in this article to find out how:
2. Glutathione and Vitamin C
Alcohol consumption causes significant oxidative stress.
Glutathione and Vitamin C are two of the most important antioxidants that exist.
While glutathione can be produced endogenously, vitamin C needs to come from food and supplementation.
A healthy diet generally gets enough of these nutrients.
However, desperate times call for desperate measures. Supplementing when drinking is probably worth it.
Get glutathione here and vitamin C here (“tanman” for a discount).
3. Electrolytes
Everyone knows you should drink water when hungover.
But if hydration is what you’re after, then water alone may not cut it.
Especially the crappy tap water that you’ll find out at the bars.
There are ways to mitigate this with the drinks you choose themselves (let me know if you want a follow up post about healthier alcohols).
But true hydration comes from electrolytes and minerals.
Some traditional methods include raw milk/goat milk, or pickle juice (shout out my eastern european college friends for this one).
If you’re looking for a slightly more packaged solution though, you can use Sol Salts or Sea MD.
Eating Redmond Real Salt in a pinch will help if you have nothing else.
4. Red Light Glasses
The alcohol is not the only thing that will make you feel like crap after a night partying.
While this trick won’t turn back the sleep clock, it will at least help you minimize the hormonal disruption of staying up til 5am in a neon lit club.
I got mine from Blublox (prescription), but I hear Ra Optics is good too.
5. ZBiotics
Despite being around for years, no one seems to know about what might be one of the most interesting innovations in the bio-hacking/supplement space to ever exist.
But first, a word about artificiality.
My philosophy of health is entirely based on natural living.
This is not that controversial, given that the whole goal of health optimization is to create an internal and external environment for the body that most closely approximates the world we evolved in.
That being said, we encounter plenty of artificial harmful stimuli today.
Drinking is one such example.
So it might make sense that tools that can help counteract such effects might also be artificial.
